Z needs a tuneup
Carlos Zambrano’s back injury might be behind him, but the Cubs diagnosed another problem after this second consecutive bad outing since coming off the disabled list.
Zambrano gave up four runs and a season-high 11 hits in 3 1/3 innings in the Cubs’ 4-1 loss to the New York Mets on Sunday at Wrigley Field. Three of the runs were earned, but the unearned run came after an errant pick-off throw by Zambrano in the third.
The Cubs’ believe Zambrano’s latest problem is mechanical.
”[Pitching coach] Larry Rothschild says he’s opening up his front shoulder and they’re getting a good look at him,” manager Lou Piniella said. ”He’ll have to work on it.”
In his first start back Tuesday, Zambrano allowed a season-high eight runs in 4 1/3 innings against the Washington Nationals.

Soriano scratched with sore knee
Alfonso Soriano was scratched from Tuesday’s game because of a sore knee that’s been nagging him for four months, but the Cubs left fielder will hold off on getting an MRI to see if he responds to treatment.
Soriano was examined during Tuesday’s game, a 15-6 loss to the Washington Nationals, by the team’s medical staff.
“[The doctor] thinks it’s nothing big,” Soriano said after the game. “He said if I keep playing, and I have a sore knee, we’ll do an MRI. I know I want to do it anyway, but he said if I play tomorrow or Thursday and it’s sore, we’ll do it right away.”

Attributes abound for Cubs’ talented trio
Derrek Lee is consistent, Aramis Ramirez has been clutch and Alfonso Soriano can provide a spark. The trio are the Cubs’ nominees for the Hank Aaron Award.
The Hank Aaron Award, presented by Sharp, is awarded annually to the best overall offensive performer in each league, with each club having three nominees. This is the seventh consecutive year that fans have had a voice in selecting the award winners.
Fans can vote through Sept. 15 to determine the club nominee, and then voting will be held Sept. 16-30 to select the winner in each league. The winners will be announced during the World Series.

7-game stretch has Chicago Cubs at crossroads
The Cubs have come to the proverbial fork in the road and now must decide which team they’re going to be the rest of the 2009 season.
Will they be the offensive power that leads the National League in runs scored in the second half or the lackluster lineup that reared its ugly head again Wednesday night in Cincinnati?
Will they be a pitching-rich staff that dominates opposing hitters or a diverse group of characters who can’t seem to throw strikes?
Will they be a veteran team that plays fundamentally sound baseball or an old-looking squad that can’t make a simple tag, misjudges fly balls and throws to the wrong base?

Hill to get breather with Soto's return
Koyie Hill will finally get a chance to catch his breath.
Catcher Geovany Soto, the 2008 National League Rookie of the Year, returns on Friday when the Cubs open a four-game series against the Colorado Rockies, currently the NL Wild Card leaders.
Soto has been out since July 7 because of a strained left oblique and played three games this week with Double-A Tennessee. He tuned up with a home run Tuesday in his third at-bat. The Cubs will make another roster move on Friday.

Gorzelanny to make first start for Cubs
Tom Gorzelanny’s last start in the Major Leagues was back on Sept. 10, 2008, when he was wearing Pittsburgh’s black and gold. It ended early because of an injury to the middle finger of his left hand, and he exited after 2 1/3 innings.
This year the left-hander pitched out of the bullpen for the Pirates in May and early June before returning to the rotation for Triple-A Indianapolis, where he was 4-3 with a 2.48 ERA in 15 starts.
On Tuesday he will trot to the mound at Great American Ball Park for the Cubs, making his first start since being acquired on July 30 in a five-player deal with the Pirates.

Ramirez could be key to Cubs' success
Last winter, Lou Piniella said the one thing the Cubs were missing was a left-handed bat in the middle of the lineup. So, they signed Milton Bradley in January.
Shortly after the All-Star break, when the Cubs were in Philadelphia and within a few games of St. Louis in the National League Central standings, Piniella said they were still in need of a left-handed bat. Maybe that’s not what the Cubs needed at all. At the July 31 Trade Deadline, general manager Jim Hendry did add two lefties, but they were pitchers John Grabow and Tom Gorzelanny. The Cardinals, meanwhile, plucked Matt Holliday, who has provided a huge lift, batting .600.
